At CSR in March I was delighted to be able to take a class with the wonderful Laurie Mika. I wasn't sure if I really needed to add another medium to my list of materials I like to work with. Another area that needed tools of it's own and could develop into another money sink. I was wrong. Of course I needed to learn how to play with polymer clay. And what fun we had.
I decided more play was needed and stamp camp in September provided a wonderful opportunity. There was a whole unallocated day for doing whatever we wanted so I packed up the car with the portable toaster oven ( thanks Eliza ) preconditioned polymer clay, pasta machine and stamps and powders and paints and of course Laurie's book Mixed Media Mosaics. Being the person I am, decided to start at the beginning and work my way through. Had some company along the way with the wonderful Therese. At the end of about 10 hours I had a whole lot of tiles and not much idea what to do with them. But a little more time and I ended up producing two lovely pieces.
Grace is a 4 x 4 inch canvas board. I used the cuttlebug Fleur de lys folder for the black background and a stamp for the foreground. I am considering turning this into the front cover of a journal.
A lady of quality is mounted on a disused wooden stamp block. I love the way she has turned out. You can click on her for a larger image.
Thanks Laurie for the inspiration and the new media to play with. I can see more fun days coming up with polymer clay.

Wow, they look great Martina. I am so sorry to have missed Laurie's class. I must purchase her book while the $$ is so good.
The artwork you´re sharing are so beautifully and uniquely!!! It's a pleasure to visit your blog.
Thank you very,very much!
Fabulous pieces, Martina! I'm sure Laurie would be very proud that someone has continued to work with clay. We all had great pleasure to learn from such a beautifull person and great artist but sadly not many of us have done anything since. At least I haven't seen much on different blogs.
WOW Martina your work is really so beautiful
These look great Marty. Grace will make a great journal cover.
This piece is so lovely Martina, and even nicer "in the flesh". So glad that I had the chance to see it up close. You inspire me to get out my PC and play.
Hugs,
Beautiful work. I love Laurie's work and was given a link to your blog because I just posted my take on her work. What a delight it must have been to meet the guru of polymer clay.
Hey Marty,
Beautiful, really beautiful and what a great idea for the first piece. Great to see you are using the oven that had it's special delivery.... LOL....
Hugs Eliza

These are absolutely beautiful!! I hope so much you will share the completed journals when you make them. Thanks so much for visiting my blog over the past few months. I look forward to your comments!! Jan Harris
Fabulous pieces Martina.
Thanks for your comment on my book. The chain appearance is what you get when you bind correctly and loop the thread through and around the previous thread. I did a one day course and learnt how this was done then practiced many times so as not to lose the technique. Let me know how you learned this.
Celeste
